Introduction
Compsocidae contains two genera, each with one species. Compsocus elegans is found in Mexico and Panama, and Electrentomopsis variegata is found in Mexico.
Characteristics
- Head:
- Antennae have 13 or 14 segments.
- Frontal sutures are present.
- Legs: Tarsi have three segments.
- Thorax: Mesothoracic tergal lobes do not protrude above a line drawn from vertex of head to dorsal surface of abdomen.
- Wings:
- Forewing pterostigma is closed basally.
- Forewing vein 2A joins vein 1A.
- Hindwing vein Rs first segment is either present or absent.
- Hindwing vein M is not branched.
- Male: Phallosome has an arched or linear tip (aedeagus) and distally broadened parameres.
- Female: Third ovipositor valvula deeply bilobed apically.
Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships
Molecular analysis including one species of Compsocus placed family Compsocidae in infraorder Amphientometae (18S nDNA; Johnson et al. 2004), but relationships within the family have not been investigated with molecular data.
