Falcomonas daucoides

Described by Hill; type species Falcomonas daucoides (marine; Hill 1991)
Currently only one strain has been analyzed using molecular methods (Marin et al. 1998; Hoef-Emden et al. 2002). Neither in molecular phylogenies inferred from nuclear nor in phylogenies inferred from nucleomorph SSU rDNA sequences can its position be resolved. This may be caused by a low evolutionary rate relative to other cryptophytes.
Characteristics
- Type of biliprotein: PC569
- Nucleomorph free in periplastidial space
- Dimorphism unknown
- Light microscopy: blue-green marine cryptophyte, bent acuminate cell, one plastid with a pyrenoid, furrow only
- Ultrastructure: serrated hexagonal plates (IPC), hexagonal plates and fibrils (SPC), mid-ventral band, furrow only, pyrenoid dissected by a cytoplasmic tongue of the periplastidial space
