Brachoria indianae
The Indiana Mimic Millipede
Paul MarekCharacteristics
Brachoria indianae individuals are about 35.8 mm long and 8.5 mm wide (females 37.2 mm X 9.1 mm). Color: 3-spotted yellow.

Habitat
Brachoria indianae specimens were collected during the day (14:00) on a north-facing bank of a deeply cut stream gully (draining to the Ohio River about one km southeast of the site). Individuals were found in a moist area beneath a waterfall and under layers of decomposing leaf material, about 3 m above (north) of the stream. One other xystodesmid encountered sympatrically at this locality is Apheloria virginiensis butleriana, which appears similar in coloration with B. indianae. Note: Individuals of B. indianae may be confused in the field with A. virginiensis butleriana due to similarity in color patterns.Distribution
Brachoria indianae is known from south of the Wisconsin glacial limit in southeastern Indiana - in Franklin, Clark and Jefferson counties - southeast to the Bluegrass Region near Lexington and to Estill and Madison counties in Kentucky. There are no recorded localities between Clark County, Indiana and Lexington, Kentucky. The closest known Brachoria species, B. electa and B. plecta, occur 35 km west and 29 km northeast of B. indianae. I could not find any individuals of B. indianae near the historical type locality in Brookville, despite extensive sampling in and near Franklin County.Conservation status
Brachoria conta is threatened by habitat loss due to agriculture (especially growing demand for paper products), coal mining, development, and the invasion of exotic species.References
